17' Rangeley-Style Guide Boat - $17,000 (Bozeman)

The Rangeley boat design was developed in the northeastern U.S in the late 1800s, primarily for sport fishing. The unique hull design proved to be lightweight, highly maneuverable and able to track a line. Known to be comfortable to fish from and highly regarded for stability on rough water due to the widely-flared hull design. The oiled-cedar slatted floorboards provide a flat surface which allow casting from a standing position. Also included: two 7’-6” handmade Shaw and Tenny spoon oars, leather-wrapped with round brass oarlocks (oars were wrapped in the original plastic before the one time the boat was in the water in 2022). The hull is 17' 3" long, with a 4'-3.5" beam, two rowing stations with adjustable foot braces and an 18", doubly-reinforced mahogany flat transom for motor mount. White oak, mahogany and cedar are used throughout, with beautiful brass fitments for the seats, and a brass-lined, solid-mahogany keel. The weight is approx 135-150 lbs.
Comes with original Trailex, INC. Model 1200 Aluminum trailer (equivalent to their present-day UT1200 but with then-current incandescent lights and painted, solid rims vs galvanized on the new UT1200) a spare tire mounted on matching rim, and a new custom-built, heavy-duty cover suitable for towing and storage. The trailer is currently registered in MT; clear title in hand.
The boat has been in the water only one confirmed time. Otherwise, both boat and trailer were kept in storage since it was built in 1994. As the pictures show, it is in nearly-new condition; there are a couple surface scuffs on interior of the port rear transom and a few light scratches on the hull.
The boat currently resides in Bozeman, MT. It is a beautifully-preserved classic piece of wooden boat history, intertwined with the historical rise of fly fishing in the US. It belongs in the hands of someone who lives in an appropriate lake area and has an appreciation for classic boats.
